Who's Sticking with D&D Next Year?
Dungeons & Dragons 5e is getting a 2024 update, but so are Pathfinder, Starfinder, and a slew of other 5e competitors. Which will you be playing?
The next “version” of D&D 5e is set to release in 2024. It will still be technically Fifth Edition (that’s what WotC is telling us now, at least), but the community is likely to call it 5.5 or 6e.
But that’s not the only major TTRPG release in 2024.
Paizo is releasing Pathfinder Remastered and Starfinder Second Edition in 2024. Kobold Press is releasing Black Flag Roleplaying, or Tales of the Valiant, a backward compatible 5e derivative. MCDM is releasing its own fantasy RPG.
And that’s just what I can remember off the top of my head. There are probably more. Heck, I’m still considering a PbtA cyberpunk-fantasy core myself.
Which brings me to my question: with so many options, are you still going to be playing D&D next year? And if so, which one?
Personally, my weekly in-person group is going to be playing 5e like we already do, as we’ve always played it. We’re not going out of our way to completely change everything.
But if there are changes we like (such as Guidance becoming a Reaction instead of Action), we’ll run it. If there are some we don’t, like OG versions of classes or subclasses, we’ll do that.
However, I can 100% guarantee we won’t be swapping wholly to the 2024 edition of D&D.
Because we like 5e. There are some warts on it, sure, and it’s not the best system out there. But we know it, we have content for it, and we enjoy playing it with each other.
Will I be buying the D&D 2024 core books and content? Yeah, I’m sure I will. But it’s not going to totally replace the hundreds of dollars worth of original stuff
I doubt I’ll use the VTT and such because even in my online game, the group doesn’t like using a VTT.
But as for adopting every part and parcel of 5.5? Nah. Not immediately, at least. As the years go by, who knows how much we’ll change and adopt. But in 2024, I’m sure we’ll have both the 2014 PHB on the table right beside the 2024 one, mixing and matching and having fun regardless.
I am definitely going to be trying the new Pathfinder and Starfinder games because I love the rulesets and can’t wait to get in on a ground floor, if not the ground floor.
And I have the limited editions of the Kobold Press RPG coming and have been reading the alpha docs, and it’s really good. But it’s not THAT different from 5e. I don’t even feel like it’s as different from 5e as Pathfinder was from 3.5.
That said, I do adore Kobold Press content, and I will continue to use their supplements and adventures with my games, since even the new stuff will be backward compatible with 5e.
What are you going to be doing in 2024? Sticking with 5e as it is or moving on in some way?
Ive created a fully new system .... publishing it all episodically. I just gave up on all the edtions and put together everything I liked into one :) Be very interesting to see what form the new beast shifts into...
On our table I very much doubt will convert any time soon to the 2024 version (whatever it ends up being called)
We are happy playing 5E and many of our players on the table get all their resources from D&D Beyond and dont even own any books!
Will be curious to see what changes do come, for better or for worse.
