💀Now That's What I Call Necromancy!🧙
What is it about necromancy that just makes people come crawling out of the woodwork...or graves and tombs?
Hello again, friendos!
I recently started a new series I’m calling Quick Quests. These are five-room, ready-to-run dungeons with a quest hook that can be standalone or a drop-in sidequest. And the first one is called “Now That’s What I Call Necromancy!”
(Because you’re amazing, here are 50% off coupons for both versions of the adventure!)
Writing this, though, made me start thinking about necromancy, though. Like…why is it that necromancy is one of those themes for RPGs that just won’t die? (Heh heh heh.) Why is it so popular?
I mean, I chose it to be the first entry in my new series, while the others I have drafted are all based on elemental threats. It's totally unrelated to the main idea I had for the series, but for some reason I can’t explain, it’s the first one I got online.
Heck, two of the first Dragonbane titles I downloaded off DTRPG were new necromancy spells: Additional Spellcasting: Necromancy by Philip Reed, and the free Necromancy spells from Dragon Cult Games.
And they’re great! But…why was I totally drawn to the necromancy stuff first instead of the cool other treasures and adventures?
Why did I choose to publish an adventure about a necromancer emptying a town’s graveyard of bodies instead of the fiery lair of the lava dragon Quackzacoatl inside a supposedly dormant volcano?
Beats the heck out of me!
I’ve always been drawn to those character classes in games, too. Whether it was the first EverQuest with my gnome necromancer, Ultima Online when they finally put in the Necromancy skill years too late, or the Diablo series where I can just have bone shields and exploding corpses.
Heck, my favorite D&D character to play is named Fizzbang Frazzlepop, a goblin necromancy wizard who just keeps trying to become a lich and failing over and over again.
Maybe it’s because the whole aesthetic is ridiculous and kind of grotesque. I got married on Halloween, too, so maybe releasing “Now That’s What I Call Necromancy!” just felt comfortable and like an easy way of easing into a new project.
I dunno. Maybe I’m just twisted enough to giggle at the idea of some weirdo digging up the entire cemetery and stealing the bodies?
Either way, I’m really proud of the quest, and I think this series is going to be a lot of fun to write and to play. I hope you think so, too.

P.S. Sneak Peek Of The Next Quick Quest!
The ice dungeon cometh! I am almost finished tweaking this one, and I just need a cool (tee hee) pun for a title.
Got any ideas for a pun or want to talk about necromancy? Let me know in a reply or a comment!
