LitRPG's Got Its Hooks In Me (Recommendations & More!)
I've been reading a lot of litRPG books lately, and I'm working on a new serial I think you'll love called SO YOU WANT TO BE A NECROMANCER?
I’ve been reading a ton of litRPG books lately, and I wanted to recommend some of the best ones I’ve read lately. The genre has consistently surprised me over the past year with how much I enjoy the characterization in the books. While the gamey side of it is important, I’ve been reading most of these books because I like spending time with the characters. And lately, these three series have grabbed my attention the most.
The first one is called Ultimate Level 1 by Shawn Wilson. The main character wanted to be a Baker, but he got a skill that was too powerful and the Powers That Be tried to kill him for it. I’m a big fan of the party he’s with, and I love the tower-climbing parts of it the most. Definitely check it out. Book 7 should be out soon, and I like it so much that I even subbed to the Patreon so I could read ahead on it.
Then there’s one of the genre staples called Defiance of the Fall by JF Brink, and it didn’t grab me in the first third of the book, but I kept reading because I saw promise, and I can definitely see why this 15 book series has a lot of people talking about it. Some of the characters like Ogras the demon lord just make my day.
I also think that the Victor of Tuscon series by Plum Parrot is one of the better ones I’ve plowed through lately. I adore the class system in this one, and I just generally like the author’s writing style, having read all of this Cyber Dreams litRPG cyberpunk series, too.
That should keep you busy for a while, but if you want even more, why not check out my own new webnovel serial called…
So You Want To Be A Necromancer?
I thought I'd let you all know that my newest webnovel/serial is available on Royal Road for everyone to read, and that Patreon members will get advance chapters.
The update schedule is going to be 2-3 chapters per week: Royal Road on Mondays and Fridays, and Patreon getting 3 new chapters each week (MWF).
Here's what it's about:
Millie has always wanted to be a necromancer. Growing up as the daughter of veteran dungeon delvers, she learned early on that not everyone shared her fascination with the dead. Or the undead. While other children dreamed of becoming mighty warriors, powerful sorcerers, or talented crafters, Millie wanted to befriend dungeon denizens after they died. Despite her parents trying to deter her because of how the necromancer class corrupted people, Millie was determined to prove to them (and to everybody else) that good necromancers can be good necromancers, too.
When Millie placed her hand on the stone that would determine her future, she hoped the gods would honor her wishes. They had something even better in mind: she was granted the Death Mage advanced class, a version of the necromancer that came with expanded power, but also a much higher chance of corruption.
It's been a lot of fun to write so far, and I think you'll have a lot of fun reading about Millie and her journey to being an adventurer. This is definitely a progression fantasy with an OPMC heading in, because those are so fun--but that doesn't mean there aren't consequences and hardships she'll have to deal with, either.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and I can't wait to hear your feedback on new chapters!

But What About Permanent Midnight?
It’s not gone! But it is kind of on hiatus. Talking with a few people with more genre experience than I do, I learned that cyberpunk in litRPG (and SFF in general) is considered mostly a dead genre. It’s harder to get readers, and it’s harder to make money.
To put it bluntly: I’m still unemployed and really need to make money from my writing. Going the more traditional fantasy route for my current projects just makes more sense. I’m sure you understand.
That said, SYWTBAN is currently on on Patreon for two reasons:
Patreon integrates specifically with Royal Road and most readers of the genre are used to it being on that platform.
I’m still waffling about continuing with Substack because of continual issues with the platform specifically partnering with publications like The Free Press from Bari Weiss and turning a blind eye to other dangerously pro-Nazi/pro-fasc newsletters on their platform. It’s kind of eating away at me when I think about it, but y’all are here already, so I’m torn. What do you think? (Leave a comment to let me know!)
Anyway, that’s all for me. Check out some of the recommendations above, and it would be really awesome if you’d give So You Want To Be A Necromancer? a shot on RR or Patreon.
Until next time, nerds! Don’t forget to tell your friends!
LitRPG!?!? what is this magical new realm!? 😱
I just finished the most recent Dungeon Crawler Carl book and love the series. I will definitely check out your writing on Royal Road. Thanks for the reading suggestions.
